"De Finibus Terrae"

Just a few kilometres from Masseria Alcorico, where Salento narrows into the meeting of two seas, lies Santa Maria di Leuca, the southernmost point of Puglia. A place of light and wind, of boundaries and new beginnings. A point where everything seems to pause, yet also begin again. Here, land meets sea, East touches West, and every step tells an ancient story

Known for centuries as “de Finibus Terrae”, Leuca carries the charm of thresholds: between past and present, between nature and spirituality. Visiting its bright, white and quiet heart is an experience that leaves a lasting impression, especially when reached along country roads, through olive groves and glimpses of the sea, like those surrounding our masseria.

What to see

The symbol of Leuca is its Sanctuary, dedicated to Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae. It stands where an ancient pagan temple once rose, and still preserves its original altar. Nearby, a stone cross recalls the passage of Saint Peter, who according to tradition stopped here on his journey to Rome. Beside the Sanctuary rises the majestic Leuca lighthouse, the second tallest in Italy. Together with the scenic monumental staircase and the cascade of the Apulian Aqueduct, it creates a view that leaves you speechless, especially at sunset, when the light reflects over the harbour and the stone glows with golden hues.

Noble architecture, suspended in time

Walking through the centre of Leuca, you will encounter 19th-century noble villas that seem suspended between dream and reality. Each building tells of an era, an aesthetic, a pursuit of beauty: Gothic, Liberty, Moorish and Neoclassical styles coexist side by side in a unique architectural mosaic. Among the most fascinating are Villa Meridiana, with its elegant sundial; Villa Pia, with its crenellated walls; Villa Mellacqua, romantic and almost fairy-tale-like; and Villa Episcopo, echoing Eastern influences. These residences preserve the refined past of Leuca, when it was a summer destination for aristocrats and intellectuals seeking peace and inspiration.

The hidden charm of the caves

But Leuca is not only experienced from the land. One of its most surprising treasures lies hidden among rock and water: the sea caves, shaped by the sea and time, opening along the coast like secret chests. Caves of light, shadow, silver reflections and deep blue silence. Among the most well-known are the Grotta del Drago, the Grotta degli Innamorati, the Grotta Porcinara and the evocative Grotta del Soffio, where water rises to the surface creating a magical effect. Every cavity has its own shape, story and name, passed down through generations. To explore them up close, you can set off by boat directly from the port of Leuca: at Masseria Alcorico we organise guided sea tours for you, allowing you to experience this from a unique perspective, among white cliffs and crystal-clear waters. It is a different — and unforgettable — way to be captivated by the wild beauty of the Capo di Leuca.

Leuca awaits you, just minutes from the Masseria

From Masseria Alcorico, reaching Santa Maria di Leuca takes only a few minutes. Yet it is also a small journey: from countryside to sea, from the silence of olive trees to the light of the lighthouse, from ancient stone to the line of the horizon. Leuca is not just a place to visit. It is a landscape that speaks, a lighthouse that still guides, a legend that continues to live in every wave.
